Area Schools
There are 35 schools in the Fredericton School District 18, with a total enrollment of more than 13,000 students. Fredericton High School (FHS) is the largest school in Canada with over 1,900 students and graduating approximately 450 students each year. It also has the largest school library in the country and houses the nation's only active school archives. Established in 1785, FHS is Canada' s oldest English language high school.
Leo Hayes High School is located on Cliffe Street on the Northside of Fredericton. The school was opened for students in September 1999. Hayes High is the second school in New Brunswick being built as a private-public partnership.
School District 18 offers an excellent variety of French second language programs, including core French, and early and late immersion. Ecole Ste. Anne offers Francophone families the opportunity to educate their children in their mother tongue from pre-school to grade 12.
Several High School and Junior High students in Fredericton are involved in the Junior Achievement Program, which affords practical business experience in entrepreneurship. A number of Fredericton business people volunteer their time to act as advisers and mentors to these aspiring entrepreneurs.
There are three private schools in the Fredericton area, all with religious affiliations. In addition, there are a number of private schools and institutions for more specialized, technical training in areas like computer applications and language courses.
