As the only officially bilingual province in Canada, students enrolled in public schools in New Brunswick have the option to receive instruction in both English and French through language immersion programs.
Students at the high school level have the option to participate in the Advanced Placement (AP) program, which gives students the opportunity to study at a university level and receive university credits.
Universities
University of New Brunswick
Founded in 1785, the University of New Brunswick (UNB) is Canada’s oldest English-language university, and was the first public university in North America. A leader in post-secondary education, UNB was the first university in Canada to offer computer science and forestry undergraduate degrees, and its engineering program has been ranked among the top 20% in North America. UNB is also home to a number of world-renowned research centres, including the Planetary and Space Science Centre, the only NASA-supported planetary imaging facility in Canada, and the Institute of Biomedical Engineering, a world-renowned research institute that has pioneered some of the most innovative research in biomedical engineering in North America.
St. Thomas University
St. Thomas University (STU) is unique in Canada for its focus on undergraduate liberal arts education. Offering degrees in traditional humanist disciplines such as philosophy, literature, classics, and languages, STU also grants degrees in social work, education, and gerontology.
Fredericton is also home to a number of private universities that offer online instruction, including Meritus University, Lansbridge University, and Yorkville University.
Colleges
New Brunswick College of Craft and Design
The only college in Canada to offer post-graduate programming in fine arts and applied design, the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design (NBCCD) is housed in a 1920s-era warehouse in downtown Fredericton. In addition to offering full- and part-time studies, the NBCCD is also a partner in the city’s EdVentures program, a popular craft and culture summer workshop series.
Maritime College of Forest Technology
Founded in 1946, the Maritime College of Forest Technology (MCFT) prepares graduates for management roles in the forestry sector, and is considered one of the leading forestry educational programs in North America.
New Brunswick Community College Fredericton Centre
The New Brunswick Community College (NBCC) Fredericton Centre focuses on workforce relevant training in areas like administration and information management.
Fredericton is also home to a number of other training colleges, including the Centre for Arts and Technology, the Atlantic Business College, and the Atlantic Language College.
